Welcome

I'm creating this blog space for our Summer Bridge Peer Advisors: Jamin, Sam, Luis, Renita, Kelsii and Cristal can communicate with each other.

I hope you all are having an excellent summer! We miss you at SEP.

I want to hear how you all are doing and get reports back and what you learned when you researched Mardi Gras.

We'll see if this work. You should be able to set-up a profile and post a response.

Hello Everyone!!! Here is a couple of things that I found out about Mardi Gras.

- It is originally a carnival celebration
- It occurs during the start of Catholic Season lent
- Krewe gloats pass out necklaces
- The th celebratino was found by french settlers
- 1857 was 1st parade by Mistick Krewe of Comus
- The traditional colors are purple(justice), gold(power), green (faith)
Season starts Jan. 6th which is known as the 12th night
- Monday is called lundi gras (fat monday)
- the end of the parade the people meet the courts of the celebration
-Ash wednesday is the day after fat tuesday and also was refered to trash wednesday because of the excessive garbage
- doubloons: large coins that are plastic or metal and are the three colors mentioned above
- King cake: traditional coffee cake that is oblong and braided. Iced with a simple frosting and covered withsugar in the mardi gras colors. Each cake has a hidden bean within it and the person who receives it must buy the next king cake or throw the next big party. the often use the bean in the cake to chose the queen at the masquerade ball.

This is all that I have found so far. It is not much. If i find more i will post it ASAP.

I hope that everyones summer is going great!!!

This is from Sam:

I found a cool site that gives the history of Mardis Gras
http://www.twilightbridge.com/hobbies/festivals/mardigras/history.htm

One quote I found particularly interesting was...
"Carnival became a period of abandon and merriment that preceded the penance of Lent, thus giving a Christian interpretation to the ancient custom."

Much like Mardi Gras, Summer Bridge is the party preceding the focus and sacrifice of the beginning of term/lent.
